Raices Farm establishes strong roots for new families

From The Next Door:

By Justine Ziegler

When Juan and Monika first moved to the Gorge, they wanted to belong to a community but didn’t know where to start.

They started asking around and soon discovered an opportunity for connection through The Next Door’s Raices Cooperative Farm.

Thanks to Raices (the Spanish word for roots), Juan and Monika found the strong, supportive community they were looking for, with the added bonus of being able to grow their own vegetables and fruits.

For decades, Raices has served Spanish-speaking families in the Gorge like Juan and Monika’s with:

  • Farmable, affordable plots of land

  • Chemical-free growing and preservation education

  • Healthy eating

  • Opportunities to sell excess produce

  • A sense of community and belonging

Recently, the Raices program moved from its primary location to two new locations, so sadly there’s no Plant Sale fundraiser this year. Consider giving a gift to Raices at nextdoorinc.org/donate to sustain this vital program.

The Next Door, a Gorge-based human services nonprofit founded in 1971, offers 35 programs that serve people at all stages of life. The Raices Cooperative Farm is one of the organization’s Economic Development Services programs that provide skill-building and enrichment opportunities for Spanish-speaking community members.
